Fix That Small Leak Today – and Save Yourself a Big Repair Bill Tomorrow

When your Bobcat machine isn’t performing as it should, the cause isn’t always obvious - but the damage can add up fast if the problem is ignored.

Our technician, Randy, is working on a Bobcat skid steer where one lift arm wasn’t working correctly. The cause? A bent hydraulic rod - and it all started with something relatively small: a leaking cylinder.

How a small leak turned into a big problem

The root cause: One of the hydraulic cylinders had developed a leak.

The chain reaction: The leak meant less hydraulic oil was reaching the rod, increasing the pressure and strain on it.

The result: Over time, the rod bent, causing major operational issues with the arm.

Says Randy, “This is what can happen to a cylinder or a rod that’s not properly lubricated, not properly greased, not sealed.” He explains, “The less oil you get to it, the more pressure you put on the rod itself. What ends up happening is you end up bending the rod. This is a prime example.”

Why leak checks matter

  • Catching and repairing a leaking cylinder early is far less expensive than replacing bent or damaged components later.
  • Early repair: Cylinder seal replacement or minor repairs.
  • Delayed repair: Possible bent rods, damaged arms, and costly downtime.

Here’s what we recommend.

Make it part of your routine to:

  • Inspect hydraulic cylinders for oil leaks.
  • Check your machine’s lubrication and fluid levels.
  • Schedule service quickly if you notice a leak – even if it’s small.
