How to Prevent Overheating on Bobcat Mini Track Loaders

Step-by-step radiator cleaning instructions for Bobcat MT120, MT100 & MT85.

If your Bobcat mini track loader (MT) is running hot, there’s a good chance the root cause is simple - and preventable.

According to our expert Bobcat technician, Jonathan, the number one cause of overheating on mini track loaders is a clogged radiator that restricts airflow. Dirt and other debris can block airflow through the radiator, causing the machine to overheat even when everything else is working properly

The good news? Cleaning your MT radiator is straightforward and can save you from unnecessary downtime.

Why radiator cleaning matters

When airflow is blocked:

  • Engine temperatures rise quickly
  • Machine performance drops
  • It can overheat the engine and crack the cylinder head

Regular radiator cleaning helps your mini track loader:

  • Run cooler
  • Maintain consistent performance
  • Avoid overheating-related damage

This maintenance applies to all Bobcat mini track loader models, including:

  • MT120
  • MT100
  • MT85

The quicker radiator cleaning method

For routine maintenance, a full radiator removal usually isn’t necessary.

Jonathan recommends this simple cleaning process, which is typically sufficient to maintain proper airflow.

  1. Remove the radiator cap and gas cap. Use caution - the radiator is under pressure.
  2. Remove the 10mm bolts along the back of the cooler shield that sits on top of the radiator.
  3. Pop off the cooler shield.
  4. Replace the caps before cleaning. This is important. 'You don't want debris to get inside the system,' says Jonathan.
  5. Use a handheld air blower. Blow debris out gently. Keep the nozzle back - don’t get too close and avoid damaging the fan.
  6. Remove the screen from the front of the MT or simply blow through the openings. This allows you to clear debris from multiple angles.

For many operators, this quick-clean process is sufficient.

When a deeper radiator cleaning is needed

If the radiator is heavily clogged, Jonathan recommends a more thorough cleaning option.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 above
  2. Disconnect the radiator hose at the top of the compartment (watch out for hot coolant)
  3. Remove the 13mm mounting bolts along the side of the MT
  4. Disconnect the host at the bottom of the radiator compartment
  5. Carefully pull the radiator out

Once removed, the radiator can be washed using a pressure washer with care:

  • Don't spray too closely
  • Avoid excessive pressure
  • Rinse until clean water flows through

Using too much pressure or washing too aggressively can damage the radiator. Jonathan cautions that it's important to rinse until the water that comes out is clean to avoid debris hardening inside.

This deeper cleaning is not required every time; routine air blowing is usually enough.

A simple step that prevents big problems

Cleaning your radiator regularly is one of the easiest ways to prevent overheating on your Bobcat mini track loader. As Jonathan emphasizes, this simple maintenance step can save you from costly issues and keep your machine working when you need it.
